amish county

when travelling to northeastern ohio you might run into yellow signs decorated with a horse & buggy icon: amish people ahead.

the amish are a religious community refusing to use modern technology such as electricity, cars, washing machines, and modern clothing. hence the amish come in uniform dressing of men wearing beard, hat, white shirt, suspenders, and dark pants. girls come with lovely bonnets and long-sleeve white dresses. if not riding in their cute buggies they walk in the "amish lane" on the road, a lane on the outer shoulder of the road for buggies and pedestrians.

their houses come with mailboxes announcing "miller" or "bailer". mr. miller usually does wood construction such as house building, owns a saw mill or makes furniture, mrs. miller and the miller children grow veggies, take care of animals and bee hives, produce honey, milk, and cheese to sell to tourists and locals.

just drifting through an amish community like middlefield, oh for about an hour brings many encounters with the friendly amish who like to wave at the cars passing by.
