this is as close as i will ever get to the white house. no tour for germans, as i just learnt yesterday.
the website of the white house informs international visitors to contact your country´s embassy "for assistance in submitting a tour request". read and done.
but the lady on the phone of the german embassy said, the white house would require a personal background check of the visitor, which breaches german law. in addition, the german embassy, she said, would not have the capacity to deal with that anyway.
nonplussed i hung up -- mentally i already had poised myself for another round of bureaucratic hoops involving many copies of my important document collection. but there is nothing i could do.
too bad, i had hoped to complete my tour of the three branches of the government. after all, i just had toured the supreme court to get a glimpse of highest jurisdiction and the capitol where legislative battles are fought, a few days ago.
visit the other branches with me:
- the three branches tour: jurisdiction in the highest court (part 1 of 4)
- the three branches tour: legislating in the capitol (part 2 of 4)
- the three branches tour: legislative research in the library of congress (part 3 of 4)
