on how to live in a strange city

my room: i'm enjoying a hippie-like simplicity. there are only two items that i brought, a mattress with bedding and a cardboard box for carrying books that turned into a fabulous little table for my laptop - entertainment center and connection to the world.

my house: it's not really my house of course but the temporary home of choice in atlanta (found on the craigslist and finalized through many mails and phone calls). i like the surrounding trees; it feels a bit like living in a forest. squirrels jump around in the backyard and pine cones offer themselves to become simple christmas decoration.

my street: located southwest of downtown the street stretches on and on through a middle and upper class neighborhood with gated subdivisions and little castles along the road leading to a long business strip with fast food restaurants and supermarkets. my roommate said only five minutes down the road of our house lives atlanta city mayor shirley franklin.

my neighborhood: although the landscape and gentle slopes invite to idle along them, walking is not cool in atlanta according to my roommate - at least not on your own, only in groups of two or more people is it okay to use your legs for transportation on the road that seldom sees traffic and only for short stretches features a sidewalk...

... gone are the days when horse-buggies klipp-klapped through the area. instead people stay at home, imprisoned in houses whose windows and doors are barred by iron, imprisoned in metal boxes when riding to work, and imprisoned in steel and glass during their jobs only to be taken back to their little fort in their metal box again.

my theory: big city security obsession prevails in the area. the metro has its own police present at almost every station, security guards eyeball you when entering a gas station, in front of cnn are always several police cars line up, and of course there's an army of security inside the news giant (where wearing an id batch is mandatory at all times!).
