i couldn't go because of class but i was lucky enough that my favorite photographer jerone anderson could go and see senator biden and his entourage this morning at 10:30 at the athens fairgrounds. all the information i have about the event stems from him.
he said a few hundred people showed up who lined up to be run through a metal detector. jerone said he waited 15 minutes in line.
but before the star performance a line of announcers and supporters had to be endured. u.s. senator for ohio sherrod brown announced...
... ohio governor ted strickland who wore a green tie (which is symbolic of his ambitions for ohio to become the greenest state of the usa by producing alternative energy including clean coal). gov. strickland did his part and then announced...
delaware senator joseph biden, the vice presidential candidate for the democratic party come november's election. since september 9, 2008 i've been monitoring the election coverage of nbc news.com for the ohio university's scripps school election blog and repeatedly noted in my "worst of the week" paragraph the absence of sen. biden in their news. so it's been a special treat for me to be able to cover him myself with the help of jerone.
jerone said biden talked about his previous visit to ohio university as a football player who got arrested because he set foot into a girl's dorm. a translator gave the speeches in sign language for deaf people. jerone said it was an interesting sight as she turned her head in whatever direction the speaker would turn his.
jerone said his rhetoric focused on mccain's negligence of the middle class and that biden is the one knowing a true maverick: one of his campaign advisers is truly of the maverick family who is so often cited by his opponent. jerone also said that biden said he wants to fund more education for people doing public service outside the military such as peace corps participants.
a couple of men in black stood out in the crowd of athens community people and ohio university students. jerone seized to take more pictures of them as they grew suspicious of him after a couple of photos of them instead of the candidate.here are other reports of sen. biden's visit to athens:
- athens messenger (daily city newspaper)
- ohio university's the post (student daily newspaper)
- the athens news (bi-weekly magazine)
- the columbus dispatch (ohio's capital daily newspaper)
- (ms)nbc.com's first read blog
- wsaz tv (nbc affiliate)
- cbs news
- fox news.com (this is no endorsement but for completion i added the link)
