44 for sure

as german and us media have trumpeted all over the place, us presidential candidate senator barack obama (d-illinois) has made it to berlin. i thought it might be interesting for some of you to read in english how german journalists interpret his visit.

one of the most important political media is the weekly spiegel magazine (spiegel meaning mirror) modeled after the us time magazine. is offers an english website which features articles about obama's visit. in a spiegel opinion piece the magazine sounds certain that he will become the 44th us president.
"Europe is witnessing the 44th president of the United States during this trip. Anyone who listens to him realizes that he is not only ambitious but will also make demands. In the inner circles of Angela Merkel's Chancellery, he is reportedly seen as a pleasant person, one who arouses curiosity."
more on the spiegel assessment of barack obama's berlin speech.

spiegel also published an article on the reactions of german politicians to his visit including berlin's mayor klaus wowereit.
"The speech of a global citizen," "perfect performance," an "homage to Berlin" -- After Thursday's big Obama show at Berlin's Siegessäule, German politicians seem quite impressed by the US candidate's performance. "This will strengthen the trans-Atlantic bridge," said veteran politician Edmund Stoiber."
